Podcast: City of the Rails

A mother, a daughter, and the secret world of freight trains.

When my teenage daughter skipped town to hop trains, I was drawn into the secret world of the railroads.  My search for why she would be attracted to this life had me hanging out in train yards, talking to hobos and rail workers, and even making a lame attempt to hop a train. That quest is the subject of City of the Rails, which reveals an underground world with its own citizens, rules, laws and law enforcement. This rich world, filled with astonishing characters, hides in plain sight in every city in the nation. The podcast captured a huge audience that resonated with that American urge to just go, leave it all behind, and let someone else figure out why you split. People got hooked, and spread the word, earning the show more than a million downloads.

Best Podcast ever

“An absolute masterpiece, among the best things I’ve heard in audio in 25 years. Weaves together a jarring and revelatory portrait of the railroad—one of the darkest sides of America apparently—with a personal portrait of motherhood. The story is ever broadening and deepening until you question everything about American society. I never thought anything would top S-Town but this does.” —Neelk123

We need more!!

“I absolutely was hanging on every word. Everything about this podcast has my mind spinning. It’s amazing how much goes on in and around the rail yard, how a simple life is not always simple. How parents deal and how those who live on the rail deal with the day to day of not knowing the next one. I have my fingers crossed that some way will have more to listen to in the future.” —cjiejefj

Holy Moly

“Please make this a tv series or documentary. I want more of it! I couldn’t stop listening. Amazing. I’m only on episode 6. Am sad that it will end in a few episodes.” —Lovely11Art

Secretly scary

“Listens like a thriller for anyone that’s been a teen punk that tried to do anything cool without their parents and felt like their parents were looking over their shoulder the whole time.” —longtimelistener420

Compelling

“What starts as a personal story becomes an investigation explored with tremendous journalistic skill. I’m really glad I found it.” —JKL100

One of my favorites…

“I listen to a LOT of podcasts and this one hooked me and I loved every minute of it. It’s true crime, it’s real life, it’s happy, it’s sad, it’s intriguing. I could go on because it taps so many feelings.” —BeeAnders
